中国老龄科研中心统计宣布：我国于1999年底60岁以上的人口占全国总人口比例的10.09％，全国开始进入老龄化社会。截止到2004年底，中国60岁及以上老年人口为1.43亿，占总人口的10.97％，并且每年以3.2％的速度递增，2014年将达到2亿，2026年将达到3亿，2037年超过4亿，2051年达到最大值。为了更好地解决老龄化问题，1987年5月召开的世界卫生大会提出了健康老龄化（Healthy Aging）的概念。
